STEPHEN MINISTRY AND DISASTERS

This has been a year with multiple disasters as the result of unstable weather patterns. The tornados, strong winds and hail have affected many people in our metro area as well as in many other states. The emotional toll of such events has only begun. Persons who have endured losses of property, health or loved ones will continue to experience moments of struggle as they assess their losses over the next few years. People respond quickly while the community is in shock over a disaster. Among those who experienced damage there are most likely those who progress into a form of depression which takes much of the joy away from their lives. It can easily be a year or more before they feel the full impact of their situation.

Stephen Ministers are prepared and stand ready give to spiritual encouragement to such persons. They have been trained in listening skills. They volunteer because they care about what happens to others. They have access to information about the helping agencies of the Metro Area. They know where to turn for spiritual guidance for they are involved in the spiritual activities of the church.

When it appears that all the storm damage has been repaired and the Metro Area seems to be back to normal, the Stephen Ministers of First United Methodist Church will still be helping people deal with the inner impact of the disasters they have experienced.

People are finding courage for their lives because they discover that SOMEONE CARES!

STEPHEN MINISTRY CELEBRATION

On October 11, 2008 all the Metro Area Stephen Ministry groups will gather for a celebration of the ministry they are providing for the churches of several denominations. Congratulations Stephen Ministers!
